With less than 40 days left before the presidential election. it has come down to Hillary Rodham Clinton and Donald Trump. I am usually not political on my blog. But it is really disturbing to think these elections will select the next president of the United States and one of the candidates is a billionaire reality show star. How did we end up in this current state of affairs? It really is frightening to think that someone with the caliber and demeanor, such as Trump, could possibly have a chance of becoming the leader of the free world. What is going on in the United States??? Not really sure how we ended up so divided as a country. Could it be the result of having our first African American president, Barack Obama, in office for 2 consecutive terms? The aftermath allowed underlying tones of racism that have always been prevalent in this country to be pushed to the forefront.
The current state of affairs in this county is very upsetting to say the least. The economy is bouncing back for the middle class. However, within the inner cities that is just not the case. Poverty, unemployment and crime are at an all time high. Many are living from check to check and are at risk for homelessness. As well as the gun violence in the inner city is increasing at an alarming rate. The murder rate in President Obama's hometown of Chicago is up a whopping 72%, so walking out of your home in those streets is hazardous to your life. In addition, "gentrification" is spawning up in almost every inner city throughout the nation, which is a difficult process "the haves vs. the have-nots" As well as, community relations with local law enforcement is declining at a tremendous rate. Many unarmed civilians have been killed by overzealous police departments all over the United States. Hence, the "Black Lives Matter" movement was created to protest the killings.
So these elections are so critical because this country is at a pivotal point in our history. And depending on who wins the election will determine the direction that we will take. Will they initiate "Stop and Frisk" and create a "Marshall law" and build a wall to keep out illegal immigrants? Or will we elect the first female president and if so can she be trusted? There is so much that depends on the outcome of this election. But it is your duty as an American citizen to have your voice count. Make sure you are registered to vote and exercise your rights on Nov 3. After all of the campaigning is over it will be up to us, the American people, to decide. It is your civic responsibility and as an African American woman I will never forget what my ancestors had to sacrifice for my rights to vote. So whomever you choose make sure you make your voice count....
