When I made the decision to wear my hair natural I was apprehensive, to say the least. I wasn't sure if it would look right with my style aesthetic. I was worried what my peers and family would feel about it. I just was extremely uncertain that it would be a good fit for me overall. Well I am glad to say, that was one of the best decisions I have made in 2018 thusfar. I love my hair in it's natural state. It has given me so much freedom. No more damaging heat, no more breakage from weaves and frontals. And it is so much easier to style, add a few hair products and twist and I am done. I am so happy and I am kicking myself in the butt, for not going natural earlier.

Enough about me and my personal experience, this post is actually about - Curlfest - the world's largest celebration of natural hair festival. The event took place in Prospect Park - Brooklyn, NY this past Saturday, July 21. It's the fourth year for this annual event. The Curly Girl Collective, initiated the festival back in 2014. In the past, it attracts thousands of men and women of color from all walks of life who came out to celebrate their hair and heritage. This year, the turnout exceeded expectations, more than 25,000 people in attendance. There were fashion/ hair vendors, music, and food. Celebrities were in the house as well, Rapper Ace Hood and Harlem's renowned fashion icon Dapper Dan. The ticket prices ranged from $49 - $25, which included admission, grab bags filled with beauty products and discounts in the vendor market place, they were available to purchase on eventbrite.

Every year the event has grown in sponsors and attendees, as a result of our people becoming more aware of their heritage and the desire to celebrate our blackness. No longer are we afraid to step out with our natural hair, which is has different textures and colors. We are here and we are not going anywhere. It's all about self love and celebration. No I wasn't able to attend this year, but next year I will be in the house...
